Briefs

  • Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) will replace Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) as chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Aviation. Full committee membership had not been announced as of C/R News' editorial deadline.
  • Delta Air Lines will increase its Delta Connection operations at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport with the introduction of the spring schedule on April 6. During April and May, the mainline carrier will be reducing its flights from 87 to 63, while it will increase its regional operations from 153 flights to 209. The additional Delta Connection flights will feature Bombardier CRJ regional jets, including the new 70-seat aircraft. The airline is also increasing the number of banks at D/FW from six to eight. "Delta is significantly increasing the number of departures to give customers more convenient connections and expanded travel options while making adjustments to match capacity to the demand in these markets," said Subodh Karnik, senior vice president of network and revenue management at Delta.
  • LOT, Poland's national air carrier, plans to buy 10 Embraer 170s for over $200 million, with options on an additional 11. The order is part of a fleet upgrade for the airline and the options can be converted to the larger Embraer 190s or 195s. Deliveries of the 70-seater Embraer ERJ-170 aircraft will begin in January of 2004. The state-owned airline now flies 51 planes to 45 foreign destinations. Last year LOT signed an agreement to join German Lufthansa's Star Alliance after its former strategic partner Swissair's Qualiflyer group collapsed.
