More Incursions at LAX
SkyWest and
American Eagle were involved in separate runway incursions at LAX in what
FAA classified as significant safety violations. On February 24, American Eagle was set to takeoff when a
Continental (CAL) jet crossed the end of the runway AE’s turboprop became airborne 3,500 feet from the CAL jet and flew about 800 feet over it, according to the
FAA. CAL did not have authority to cross the runway because its pilot, according to the
National Air Traffic Controllers Association, had reportedly switched to a different radio frequency without alerting the tower. An alarm warning of the impending collsion sounded in the tower before the American flight took off. On the evening of February 25, a SkyWest aircraft was forced to abort its landing when a controller spotted a second plane approach the runway, warning it to stop.
