Embraer

Finnair is converting four options it holds for the Embraer [ERJ] 170 into four firm orders for the new Embraer 190. It is also converting two firm orders for the Embraer 170 into Embraer 190 orders with these planes to be delivered by the end of 2006. The other four Embraer 190s will be delivered in 2007. Finnair will have the 190s configured to seat 100 passengers. Based on this most recent deal, Finnair will have 10 Embraer 170s and six 190s. The airline still has four more options on future Embraer 170 deliveries, which can be converted into other aircraft orders.

Four national aviation regulators recently granted Embraer a common type rating for the Embraer 170, 175 and 190. The common type rating allows operators to significantly reduce pilot training time. Pilots can be shifted from one model to another without new simulator or ground school training. Air Canada is the first carrier that can take advantage of the new rating. It flies the Embraer 175 and it will soon be flying the 190. Regulators in Brazil, the United States, Canada and Europe participated in the joint evaluation. The joint evaluation board will soon begin assessing the Embraer 195 to include it in the common type rating.

ATR

India's new Kingfisher Airlines has ordered 20 ATR 72-500s in a contract valued at $350 million. The deal also includes options for an additional 15 airplanes. The delivery of the ATR 72s is to begin in March and be completed by August 2008. The low-fare carrier will use the ATRs as feeder aircraft on smaller domestic routes linking cities to its proposed hubs in Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta and Bangalore. It will be the first carrier in India to offer in-flight entertainment on ATR aircraft.

Air Madagascar took delivery of its second ATR 72-500 at the recent Dubai Air Show. This latest delivery is part of a three-aircraft contract announced at the Paris Air Show in June. The deal also includes one ATR 42-500.

Finnish Commuter Airlines took delivery last month of the first of eight new ATR 42-500s that were ordered in June at the Paris Air Show. The planes are configured to carry 48 passengers. Finnish Commuter will use the ATRs to feed the Finnair hub in Helsinki. With the new ATRs, Finnish Commuter will begin replacing the Saab 340s now flown by a subcontractor, Golden Air.

Skyways Aviation

Skyways Aviation has brokered a long-term lease of five ERJ 145s. Mexico's Aerolitoral took delivery in September of the first three aircraft from Chautauqua Airlines. The Mexican carrier closed on the last two leases late last month. Chautauqua had pulled the 50-seat ERJs from its Delta Air Lines [DALQ] routes as its sister carrier, Shuttle America, began flying the Embraer 170 on Delta Connection routes.

AeroCentury

In a sale-lease back deal, Colgan Air recently sold AeroCentury two Saab 340Bs. The carrier then leased back the planes.

In another deal, AeroCentury leased a Dash 8 from its portfolio to DAC Aviation International. The Canadian company flies support missions for the United Nations in Africa.

AeroCentury recently sold a Shorts SD3-60 aircraft from its portfolio to an undisclosed U.S. company.

Aircraft Leasing & Management

Flybe has tapped Aircraft Leasing & Management, of Gatwick, England, to market seven BAe 146s. The British low-fare carrier is replacing the BAe 146s with Embraer 195s. The broker is also assisting Flybe with the acquisition of the Embraer aircraft.

Transport Canada

The Canadian government is establishing an aircraft sales financing program to support the construction of Canadian-made planes. The Transport Ministry decided it needed a more formal program to provide the financing for Bombardier [BBD] aircraft sales rather than an informal process that is created each time a prospective buyer seeks assistance.
