• Panama's Copa Airlines ordered 10 Embraer [ERJ] 190s with the first to be delivered in November 2005. Configured to carry 94 passengers in a two-class cabin, the plane will be used to fly into smaller markets. Copa currently flies only Boeing [BA] 737s. Copa has an option to purchase an additional 20 Embraer 190s. Embraer is currently flying the 190 on test flights. It is schedule to be certified by next fall.
• With the first two of its 23 Embraer 170s delivered, Chautauqua Airlines last week began flying the aircraft configured to carry 70 passengers in a two-class cabin for United Express.
• One of Europe's fastest growing regional carriers, Flybe, is diversifying its fleet beyond regional aircraft. The British carrier will lease up to three B737s over the next two years. Its first B737-300, which can carry 150 passengers, will be deployed on seven new routes from Birmingham International Airport.
• Raytheon Airline Aviation Services delivered the sixth refurbished Beechcraft 1900 to Jet Management. The plane will join the fleet of Sonair Servico Aereo of Angola. Sonair provides air services to oil firms within Angola and the surrounding regions. AMS Aero Management Services, a Swiss company, supervised the purchase and the conversion for Sonair. It also provides the flight crews, maintenance and support services for Sonair. The plane can carry up to 18 passengers, but it has the flexibility to take on more cargo.
• Raytheon has launched a new maintenance regime that can safely put off the overhaul of the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67D engines on the 1900s until 9,000 hours of flight time. Most current operators overhaul the engine between 6,000 and 8,000 hours. The program outlined in a Pratt & Whitney service bulletin allows specific engines to extend their overhauls to 9,000 or 14 years.
• Mesa Air Group will lease four 1900D aircraft to Gulfstream International Airlines, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The four planes are part of a fleet of 35 1900Ds flown by Mesa subsidiary Air Midwest. Mesa indicated it couldn't operate the 1900Ds profitably outside the government's Essential Air Service program.
• Mesa's Regional Aircraft Services unit is expanding its service offerings and is now marketing its services to other regional carriers. Working out of the overhaul facilities in Phoenix and Reading, Pa., Regional Aircraft Services has provided battery, brake and wheel overhaul services to Mesa planes. It will now provide aircraft cleaning, lavatory service, maintenance, ground handling and fuel services to Mesa planes and other carriers throughout the country. Mesa previously used outside vendors to provide these services.
• Now that it is flying more Dornier 328Jets, Hainan Airlines is disposing of two Bombardier [BBD] Q400s. IAA Aerospace and Airstream are marketing the 70-seat turboprop planes, owned by the Chinese carrier since 1999 and 2001.
• Comair, a unit of Delta Air Lines [DAL], has chosen Ultimate Software [ULTI] to provide Web-based software for payroll and human resources record-keeping.
