The
European Regions Airline Association convenes its annual meeting next week in Malta. The April 9-10 meeting will include discussions on expanding beyond Europe, threats and opportunities facing intra-European operations and how operators and airports can partner to alleviate rising congestion problems.
Session One – Expanding Beyond Europe will cover the Gulf region, one of the fastest growing regions in the world, how to take advantage of non-European markets and whether or not Asian carriers will use Middle Eastern hubs as transfer points given the growing congestion and the imposition of Emissions Trading Schemes in Europe. It will also discuss the impact of regional jet acquisitions on aircraft values as African carriers move from turboprops to jets. Finally, speakers will cover how Russian and Balkan states are integrating into Europe and the impact that will have on European skies. Speakers include Bertolt Flick, CEO,

Session Two centers on the continuing struggle over the imposition of Emissions Trading Scheme in Europe and the threat to airline prosperity. It will also discuss the U.S. economic downturn, the weakening dollar, the impact on aircraft values and the availability of financing for new fleets. Amongst the opportunities seen for the region are the flourishing Balkan states as they enter the European Union. Discussions will center on how vulnerable the emerging markets will be to low-fare carriers. Speakers include Antonis Simigdalas, COO,

Session Three will cover airport operations including the lack of airport capacity and the disharmony in security rules across the Continent as well as further discussions of emissions trading. Ground safety will also be a focus as speakers discuss minimizing ground damage incidents at airports as well as the unregulated environment surrounding de-/anti-icing services at European airports and its impact on safety.
