Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics which reported that U.S. airlines set an annual record by carrying 769.4 million scheduled domestic and international passengers on their systems in 2007, nearly 25 million more passengers or 3.3 percent more than they did in 2006 when the previous high was reached.
SkyWest was ranked number nine, ahead of
JetBlue, in system scheduled enplanements at 22.0 million which was up 13.1 percent. It ranked tenth in 2006. It also rose from 10 to nine in domestic system enplanements at 20.9 million, up 12.3 percent. Executive, an
American Eagle, and ExpressJet (XJT), a
Continental Express, maintained their rankings from the 2006 international scheduled enplanements list at nine and eight, respectively. Executive’s international enplanements dropped 1.0 percent to 1.7 million while XJT’s rose 3.1 percent to 2.0 million.
BTS reported that U.S. airlines carried 3.1 percent more domestic passengers in 2007 than in 2006, for an annual record of 679 million. U.S. airlines carried 4.7 percent more international passengers in 2007 than in 2006, for an annual record of 90 million. These passengers traveled on planes with average load factors of 79.9 percent, an annual record.
Southwest Airlines carried more total system passengers in 2007 than any other airline for the first time replacing American which topped the list in the previous five years; Southwest carried more domestic passengers than any other airline for the fourth consecutive year ; and American carried more international passengers than any U.S. carrier for the 18th consecutive year.
More total system and domestic passengers boarded planes operated by U.S. carriers in 2007 at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International than at any other U.S. airport for the 12th consecutive year; more international passengers boarded U.S. carriers at Miami International than at any other U.S. airport for the 13th consecutive year.
U.S. carriers operated 10.7 million domestic and international flights in 2007, 1.0 percent more than were operated in 2006. Domestic fights were up 1.0 percent from the previous year while international flights were up 0.8 percent.
System Comparisons
In other total system comparisons from 2006 to 2007:
• Revenue passenger-miles (RPMs) were up 4.0 percent in 2007.
• Available seat-miles (ASMs) were up 3.1 percent in 2007.
• Passenger load factor was up 0.7 load factor points to 79.9 percent in 2007.
• Flight stage length was up 1.5 percent in 2007.
• Passenger trip length was up 0.7 percent in 2007.
• Among U.S. airlines, Southwest carried 101.9 million passengers on its system in 2007, the most of any airline.
• Among airports, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson was the busiest U.S. airport in 2007, with 42.6 million domestic and international passenger boardings.
Domestic Air Travel
U.S. airlines carried 679.1 million scheduled domestic passengers in 2007, up 3.1 percent from 658.4 million carried in 2006. The passengers were carried on 9.8 million flights, up 1.0 percent from the 9.7 million flights operated in 2006.
In other domestic comparisons from 2006 to 2007:
• Domestic revenue passenger-miles (RPMs) were up 3.1 percent in 2007.
• Domestic available seat-miles (ASMs) were up 2.1 percent in 2007.
• Domestic passenger load factor was up 0.7 load factor points to 79.9 percent in 2007.
• Domestic flight stage length was up 0.9 percent in 2007.
• Domestic passenger trip length was unchanged in 2007. Southwest carried 101.9 million domestic passengers in 2007, the most of any airline.
• Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson was the busiest domestic airport in 2007, with 38.6 million domestic passenger boardings.
