Summit on MX Outsourcing Set
Safety, Congressional and industry leaders will be part of the Business Travel Coalition (BTC) Aircraft Maintenance Outsourcing Summit, jointly sponsored with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to be held on Monday, February 11 in Washington, DC.
The purpose of the summit is to elevate a national discussion over the efficacy of current airline industry outsourcing practices, according to Kevin Mitchell, chair of the Business Travel Coalition. It is designed to examine problems, secure stakeholder input and explore potential solutions. The venue is the Omni Shoreham Hotel; proceedings will begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 12:30 pm and be broadcast live over the Internet.
Airline industry experts have warned that current outsourcing practices pose a growing risk to the flying public of catastrophic aircraft failures or terrorist acts, due to degradation in both aircraft maintenance standards and governmental oversight.
Presenters and contributors will include the following:
• Deborah A. P. Hersman, Board Member, National Transportation Safety Board
• Greg Feith, Former Senior Air Safety Investigator, National Transportation Safety Board
• James P. Hoffa, General President, International Brotherhood of Teamsters
• John Conley, Airline Division Director, Transportation Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO
• John Goglia, Former Board Member, National Transportation Safety Board
• Kevin Mitchell, Chair, Business Travel Coalition
• Linda Goodrich, Vice President, Professional Airways Systems Specialists (PASS)
• Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., Chair, U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee
• Stacie H. Soumbeniotis, Democratic staff director, U.S. House Subcommittee on Aviation
• Steve Purvinas, Federal Secretary, Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA)
• William McGee, Author, Consumer Reports: An Accident Waiting To Happen

Green Skies Conference set for May
Green Skies Conference & Exhibition will occur May 21-23 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando, bringing aviation together on a large scale for the first time in North America to discuss aviation environmental issues.
The theme of this year's conference is "Proud to be Green." The event will showcase some of the green developments within North American aviation, with perspective from around the world. In attendance will be environmental companies, airlines, airports, aircraft manufacturers, maintenance companies, suppliers, government agencies and industry organizations.
The goal of the conference is to promote a dialog among all the stakeholders across the industry that leads to better environmental efforts, and also to prove that there are real savings to be made from embracing these principles.
"There is an enormous interest in this event, and it's coming from all corners of aviation," said Green Skies CEO Michael Miller.
Green Skies has put forward a voluntary Green Skies Pledge (available at www.greenskies.com) to encourage companies to adopt more extensive environmental guidelines. The Pledge is a 15-point list of broad environmental statements that help companies and organizations determine which green approaches make sense.
Green Skies Inc. is an aviation consulting and conference management company based in Orlando, Fla., which hosts this yearly event and also offers environmental consulting services to the aviation industry.
