Supply Side


For the first time, India's Air Deccan is ordering new aircraft. The carrier has ordered 30 ATR 72-500s configured to seat 72 passengers. In addition, Air Deccan will obtain three used ATR 42-500s and three used ATR 72-500s directly from ATR. The aircraft will be delivered over a five-year period with the first aircraft to be delivered this year. The low-fare carrier, based in Bangalore, currently has nine used ATR 42s in its fleet.


Japan Airlines International [JAL] has ordered two Bombardier [BBD] CRJ 200s for its regional carrier, J-Air. The carrier now has eight CRJ 200s flying routes in southwestern Japan.


Hemus Air, a Bulgarian airline, has added its second BAe 146 to its fleet. The RJ will be flown on international routes between Sofia, Bulgaria, and Cairo, Egypt, and Cologne, Germany.

Trade Air

Two former American Airlines [AMR] Fokker 100s are now part of the Trade Air fleet. The Croatia-base carrier will use the regional jets for charter flights between Western Europe and several Croatian cities.


Sandel Avionics reports the sale of its TAWS products to at least 12 airlines around the world, including Air Midwest, Great Lakes and Skyways. The rash of sales is in anticipation of aircraft operators meeting a March 29 deadline set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to have aircraft equipped with a ground collision warning system.

Dallas-Forth Worth Airport

With the anticipated February departure of Delta Air Lines [DAL] and its code-share regional partners from Terminal E at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the airport authority has paid Delta $7 million to gain control of the 24 gates in the terminal. In the deal, the airline was also released from all future rent requirements for the space that had been leased through 2009. With the 24 gates now under its control, the airport has embarked an a marketing program to lure major airlines to either expand service or initiate new service. The airport will provide space rent-free for one-year to any carrier leasing at least 10 gates. A financial package worth up to $12.2 million is available for the carrier that leases 10 gates. Should a carrier lease 22 gates, then the incentive package would be worth $22.2 million.

Aeros Aviation

Aeros Aviation and Bionopoly are now marketing a new biometric device which will generate alphanumeric pass codes after reading a fingerprint. The device can be used to enhance aviation and computer security. Because a fingerprint is more difficult to steal or duplicate, the companies claim it provides two security levels above any other biometric product now on the market.

Research Frontiers

Research Frontiers, with a 39-year track record in the glass and plastics industry, is now marketing SPD-Smart technology for aircraft windows, sun visors and cabin partitions. Using suspended particles, the technology gives aircraft passengers greater light and glare control. The windows are lighter and easier to clean, the company says.

Shepherd Systems

Portugalia Airlines has purchased a market information data transfer program, Clarity, from Shepherd Systems, a unit of Cendant [CD]. The program enables the European regional carrier to access specific market information obtained from the major global distribution systems to plan new revenue opportunities.


ExpressJet Airlines [XJT] has formed an alliance with the FlightSafety Academy, a unit of FlightSafety International. Under the terms of the deal, the flight school in Vero Beach, Fla., provides a well-defined preparation path for students to graduate and meet ExpressJet's hiring standards. The students have access to a full ERJ 145 fight simulator as part of their training program.

HMS Software

By using the recently installed HMS Enterprise Manufacturing Information Suite from HMS Software, Dassault Falcon Jet was able to be certified by the FAA for an electronic shop floor manufacturing environment. The business aircraft manufacturer can comply with FAA regulations for electronic signatures, allowing its Arkansas manufacturing plant to eliminate paper documentation. The software creates an electronic audit trail of the manufacturing process.
