Sensis ASDE-X Commissioned at Washington Dulles International Airport

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Sensis Corporation announced that its Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) system is now operational at Washington Dulles International Airport. Dulles is the twelfth airport where the ASDE-X system is operational. The FAA is deploying ASDE-X to a total of 35 of the nation's airports.

ASDE-X fuses ground surveillance data collected from a number of sources, including radar, Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) and aircraft transponder multilateration, to provide air traffic controllers with a real-time, highly accurate location and identity of all aircraft and vehicles on the airport surface. Additionally, the system's advanced conflict detection and alerting technology, Safety Logic, uses complex algorithms to detect and alert controllers to potential aircraft and vehicle incursion situations.

"With ASDE-X, controllers at Dulles now have the most advanced surface surveillance technology available for the prevention of runway incursions," said Tony Lo Brutto, Vice President and General Manager of Sensis Air Traffic Systems. "Additionally, ASDE-X assists with a more efficient traffic flow, which studies have shown has led to reduced taxi time at other ASDE-X airports. With today's high fuel cost, this not only benefits the airlines but also the environment due to reduced emissions."

The 12 airports where ASDE-X is operational are: General Mitchell International Airport (Milwaukee, WI); Theodore Francis Green Airport (Providence, RI); Orlando International Airport (Orlando, FL); William P. Hobby Airport (Houston, TX); Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (Atlanta, GA); St. Louis International Airport (St. Louis, MO); Bradley International Airport (Windsor Locks, CT); Seattle Tacoma International Airport (Seattle, WA); Louisville International Airport (Louisville, KY); Charlotte Douglas International Airport (Charlotte, NC); Chicago O'Hare International Airport (Chicago, IL) and Washington Dulles International Airport (Washington, DC).

For customers outside of the U.S., Sensis offers a solution similar to ASDE-X called Advanced - Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS). A-SMGCS is a comprehensive system that fuses the data from several surveillance sources to provide a complete picture of the airport surface. Sensis A-SMGCS is operational at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, India and is being deployed at Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney Airports, Australia and at Hong Kong International Airport, China.
