Detroit Metro Airport Says 'Hola!' to AeroMexico

New Non-stop Flights to Monterrey, Mexico City Begin April 6

DETROIT, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Wayne County Airport Authority will say “Hola!” to AeroMexico, Mexico’s largest airline, when it begins new, non-stop service between Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Monterrey, Mexico, with continuing service to Mexico City. Starting April 6, the new flights will operate three times per week aboard AeroMexico’s Next Generation Boeing 737 aircraft.

“The Airport Authority eagerly anticipates the arrival of AeroMexico to Detroit Metro Airport,” said Lester Robinson, Wayne County Airport Authority CEO. “AeroMexico’s decision to introduce service to Detroit is reflective of the airport’s strengthening role in the future of our region’s economy.”

“AeroMexico’s new, non-stop flights to both Monterrey and Mexico City will mean the addition of yet another foreign-flag carrier to the Detroit market and will provide even greater options for travelers,” Robinson added.

The new southbound flight, AM693, will depart Detroit Metro on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m. ET and arrive in Monterrey at 11:15 a.m. CT, continuing on to Mexico City for a 2:00 p.m. CT arrival.

The northbound flight, AM692, will operate Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, departing Mexico City for Monterrey at 2:15 p.m. CT, then departing Monterrey at 4:50 p.m. CT and arriving in Detroit at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Monterrey is Mexico’s third-largest city and a major industrial center. The area is home to more than 3.8 million as well as several corporations with strong ties to Detroit. Mexico City centers one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world with a population of nearly 20 million. Detroit customers also have the opportunity to connect via AeroMexico’s hubs at both Monterrey and Mexico City to destinations both within Mexico and throughout Latin America.

In conjunction with the new flights, AeroMexico will also offer Detroit customers free, connecting bus transfers from Monterrey to Saltillo, home to a number of automotive production facilities and parts suppliers.

“Detroit is an important market for Monterrey and for AeroMexico,” said Ruberman Aldana, AeroMexico District Sales Manager for North Central U.S.A. “We look forward to being a part of the Detroit community and to providing Detroit travelers with new, convenient flight options to Mexico and beyond.”

The AeroMexico announcement comes just weeks after SkyTeam partner Northwest Airlines announced it would begin daily, non-stop service from its largest hub at Detroit Metro to Monterrey, in conjunction with its regional subsidiary Compass Airlines. Northwest also offers daily, non-stop flights between Detroit and Mexico City.

Serving nearly 36 million passengers each year, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is the largest airport in Michigan and among the 20 busiest air transportation hubs in the world. In addition to serving as the largest hub in the world for Northwest Airlines, the world’s fifth largest airline by revenue passenger miles, DTW is home to fourteen additional airlines, including several low-cost carriers and foreign-flag carriers. Altogether, DTW offers more than 1,200 non-stop flights per day to over 160 destinations worldwide.
