Fans at the games will be given special Komen "Goal for the Cure" signs and will hold up their signs every time a goal is scored. As an extra incentive, during halftime fans will be asked to hold their signs, and the camera will zoom in on one lucky winner of two American Airlines round-trip domestic tickets.
Customers may also see one of American's eight Komen-branded pink-ribbon planes flying the skies this month, as they make special appearances at various Race for the Cure cities. To announce its Lifetime Promise Partnership with Komen last year, American unveiled eight aircraft displaying the Komen pink-ribbon motif, representing the sobering statistic that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
American kicked off its month-long observance last week with a special gift card offer: during October, when customers purchase an American Airlines Gift Card and specify Komen as the beneficiary, American will donate $5 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every $50 of travel purchased via the gift card. To purchase gift cards and support Susan G. Komen for the Cure, consumers can go to AA.com/giftcard. When completing payment information, "Komen" must be entered in the tracking code box in order for the donation to be made. Gift cards must be purchased by Oct. 31 for the 10 percent donation to be made to Komen, and it applies only to online purchases.
In addition to the gift card, American is continuing its Miles for the Cure(TM) fundraising campaign, which rewards donors with five AAdvantage miles for every dollar they contribute to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, with a minimum $25 donation. American's customers can support the fight against breast cancer by simply visiting www.aa.com/komen to make a donation.
American has also coordinated employee participation for Komen's African-American initiative, Circle of Promise, to foster increased awareness, support, empowerment and action. A mammogram-mobile has made several stops at American's headquarters as part of the program, and attendees at the airline's African-American Employee Resource Group (AAERG) National Convention last month enjoyed a special appearance by breast cancer awareness spokesperson Rene Syler, former co-anchor of CBS News' "The Early Show."
American Airlines has supported Susan G. Komen for the Cure for more than 25 years as a national sponsor and last year announced an expanded partnership, becoming the organization's official airline and first-ever Lifetime Promise Partner. American pledged to raise a minimum of $1 million annually for eight years to fund Susan G. Komen for the Cure's first Promise Grant, a study of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. IBC is a very aggressive form of breast cancer that is often undetectable by mammography and ultrasound. The disease affects a disproportionate number of younger, premenopausal women who are typically not considered to be at risk for breast cancer.
