Pennsylvania Governor Rendell Announces $10.9 Million in Aviation Grants
Cites Benefits for Local, State Economies
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 9/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell today announced the investment of $10.7 million in federal and state grants for improvements at 15 airports in 13 counties.
“Investing in airport development pays wonderful dividends for our local economies,” Governor Rendell said. “Vibrant airports attract business customers and serve as a focal point in building a region’s business climate.”
The grants are paid, in part, from the Federal Aviation Administration’s state block grant program. The state’s share comes from the aviation development program.
In his budget proposal earlier this year, Governor Rendell urged legislators to double the state transportation assistance program to $10 million to pay for additional airport work.
The 15 grants are:
Brandywine Airport, Chester County - $57,000 in federal funds, $1,500 in state funds, and $1,500 in local funds to design runway and taxiway safety area enhancements.
Doylestown Airport, Bucks County- $456,000 in federal funds, $12,000 in state funds, and $12,000 in local funds to purchase and clear land in the Runway 5 protection zone.
Ebensburg Airport, Cambria County- $418,000 in federal funds, $11,000 in state funds, and $11,000 in local funds for improvements to bring the runway safety areas up to FAA standards.
Greene County Airport - $198,550 in federal funds, $5,225 in state funds, and 5,225 in local funds to rehabilitate the main apron.
Hazleton Municipal Airport, Luzerne County- $190,000 in federal funds, $5,000 in state funds, and $5,000 in local funds to design beacon and lighting improvements.
Hazleton Municipal Airport, Luzerne County- $237,500 in federal funds, $6,250 in state funds, and $6,250 in local funds for new snow removal equipment.
Indiana County/Jimmy Stewart Airport - $4,465,000 in federal funds, $176,250 in state funds, and $58,750 in local funds to extend Runway 10-28.
Indiana County/Jimmy Stewart Airport - $133,000 in federal funds, $3,500 in state funds, and $3,500 in local funds for new snow removal equipment.
Joseph A. Hardy/Connellsville Airport, Fayette County- $1,900,000 in federal funds, $50,000 in state funds, and $50,000 in local funds for runway improvements.
New Garden Flying Field, Chester County-$997,500 in federal funds, $26,250 in state funds, and $26,250 in local funds to remove non-compatible objects and start the first-phase construction of an extended parallel taxiway.
Port Meadville Airport, Crawford County- $237,500 in federal funds, $6,250 in state funds, and $6,250 in local funds for new snow removal equipment.
Pottstown Municipal Airport, Montgomery County- $570,000 in federal funds, $15,000 in state funds, and $15,000 in local funds for lighting and electrical improvements.
Schuylkill County/Joe Zerbey Airport - $190,000 in federal funds, $5,000 in state funds, and $5,000 in local funds to expand the apron.
Somerset County Airport - $148,200 in federal funds, $3,900 in state funds, and $3,900 in local funds for pavement improvements.
William T. Piper Memorial Airport, Clinton County- $152,000 in federal funds, $4,000 in state funds, and $4,000 in local funds to update the Airport Layout Plan.
