Sharon Valencik

Rockville, MD September 22, 2008 - Rotor & Wing awarded the 40th Annual Helicopter Heroism Award and multiple Above and Beyond the Call awards at its Search and Rescue Summit on September 18th. The summit, held in Reston, Virginia, was a full-day conference bringing together SAR professionals from public service, military and the private sector to provide their unique perspectives and lessons-learned in the real world SAR efforts.

Rotor & Wing presented the 2007 Helicopter Heroism Award to Sergeant First Class Peter Rohrs, C Co., 3-82nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, U.S. Army. SFC Rohrs, previously awarded the Silver Star by President Bush, received the 2007 Helicopter Heroism Award for a mission saving wounded soldiers from an Afghanistan battlefield amid enemy fire. His crew stood with him in an emotionally-charged ceremony as he accepted the award.

The Public Service 2007 Above and Beyond The Call Award was awarded to the Mexican Government State of Tabasco Air Rescue Unit Capt. Raul Lozano Tellez, Capt. Ivan Valencia Reyes, Capt. Enrique Velazquez Gonzalez, Paramedic Victor Figueroa Corchado, Paramedic Adrian Rivera Padron, Paramedic Fausto Valdes Becerra, Paramedic Noe Vilchis Lopez, Hoist Operator Mario Martinez Garcia, and Aviation Maintenance Technician Rogelio Sanabria Piña. During this mission, the crew rescued over 400 hundred people from the Tabasco, Mexico floods.

The Military 2007 Above and Beyond The Call Award was presented to U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Lauren Cox, Lt. Alex Barker, AET3 Celso Jaquez and AST2 Shawn Lesko. Their mission took place off the Northern California coast in 30-foot seas and 45-Kt winds with no illumination.

“When you sit in that room and hear the recounting of the rescues and see first-hand the level of respect and honor advanced not only toward these individuals by their peers – many of whom are past Helicopter Heroism Award winners themselves – but back and forth between all of the award winning crews toward each other and the other SAR professionals gathered in the room, you begin to realize what an honor it is just to be a part of this community and the Helicopter Heroism Award,” comments Randy Jones, Rotor & Wing publisher.
