Coast Guard Arms MH-65 Helicopters

E

The U.S. Coast Guard is adding M240 machine guns to its MH-65 helicopters, the Coast Guard variant of the Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin. The intention is to better prepare the service to respond to harbor threats, such as the one that crippled the USS Cole in the Port of Yemen in 2000. Delivering machine gun fire from a helicopter, says the Coast Guard, is safer than firing from a ship in densely populated ports because it reduces the chance of rounds continuing past the intended target and injuring innocents.
