Departed Tampa Executive Airport (VDF), and had a destination of The Florida Keys Marathon Airport (MTH), Marathon, FL. Pilot reported to FAA inspector that he had filled the fuel tanks prior to departing MTH; however pilot further stated receipt from self-service fuel pump was probably in a/c when it sank. In review of self-service fuel records at MTH, pilot had purchased 17.36 gallons of fuel on his personal credit card. |

Pilot reported to National Park Service Park Rangers that he was 3 hours into flight, tracking wolves throughout the area with radio telemetry. Passenger, a private biologist who had frequently monitored wolves in the park, located a new signal and pilot began orbiting area at a low altitude, so passenger could began taking photos. |

Pilot reported to park ranger that during turn, a/c encountered either downdraft or tailwind, and a/c descended into trees. Pilot stated that he blacked out momentarily. As he awoke, he saw smoke and flames within the cabin area. |

CFI stated in NTSB Pilot Accident Report that he and pilot he was instructing practicing emergency procedures, in particular, power recovery autorotations. At 50 feet agl rolled throttle late, realized ground was rapidly approaching, and decided to perform running landing. With throttle partially on rotor rpm decayed, and when helicopter contacted ground, a rotor blade struck tail boom. Pilot shut down a/c and confirmed damage to tail boom. |

A/c substantially damaged when impacted tree during landing rollout at Oliver Springs Airport (TN08). During approach to runway 15, witness thought it was a little higher than normal, and appeared to be "coming in a little faster than we do - came in pretty hot." The airplane subsequently touched down "pretty firmly" in front of him and bounced 4-5 feet in air. The airplane then landed again, with the nose wheel hitting the ground first, but once down, all the wheels stayed on the ground. |

The airplane then started to slide at an angle, towards trees on opposite side of runway. As a/c neared left side of runway, suddenly turned180 degrees, then slid off runway and into trees, and engine went to full power. Engine continued to run for about 30 seconds before shutting down. |

The controller asked pilot to explain the cause of situation to which the pilot replied, "just cockpit distraction, that's all I can tell you." |
