John joined the RAAF at age 17 and graduated as a pilot at age 18. He mostly flew four engined aircraft, with a two-year diversion onto helicopters for a lengthy Vietnam tour flying the Huey. He then returned to Maritime duty (on a P3 Orion). He left the Australian Airforce, after 24 years of primarily jet trainer and four-engined flight instruction, a stint that also included two years seconded to a Hawker de Havilland as a Test Pilot. He flew commercially for two years before joining the UK's Royal Airforce. An RAF secondment during the first Gulf War to fly with the Royal Saudi Airforce was followed by seven years of flying duties with British Aerospace UK. Since 1999, John has been involved in aviation safety with both the International Aviation Safety Association (IASA) and Air Safety Week.
