Fire Scout Undergoes Controlled Flight

Northrop Grumman has tested its MQ-8B Fire Scout vertical unmanned aircraft system under the command of its new ground control station (GCS). The STANAG 4586-compatible GCS controlled the unmanned aircraft during trials in late September at Yuma Proving Ground. The control station features multiple radios and a tactical common data link. Mike Roberts, principal investigator of the GCS and chief engineer for the Fire Scout, says that the tests “are a great prelude to demonstrating our VSM/core unmanned control system (CUCS) with the Army’s Universal/One System GCS.”
