USMC Awards K-MAX Demo Contract

The helicopters division of Kaman Aerospace Corp. has obtained an $864,000 U.S. Marine Corps contract to demonstrate the unmanned K-MAX helicopter’s capability to deliver cargo to troops in extreme environments and high-altitude conditions. Kaman plans to issue a subcontract to Lockheed Martin—its partner in the K-MAX program—to incorporate a beyond line of sight datalink and UAS mission management system into the helicopter. Testing will focus on the ability to carry up to 20,000 pounds of cargo in a 24-hour period at a round trip distance of 150 nautical miles. The demo is scheduled to take place in late 2009.
