Safety Webinar Examines the Issues
This year has seen some of the worst controversies surrounding aviation safety in more than a decade as analysts debate the impact of such accidents as Colgan Flight 3407, the subject of Senate hearings yesterday, as well as Air France 447. For that reason, Aviation Today is assembling four aviation safety experts to discuss what it all means during its latest webinar – The Troubled Status of Air Safety – set for August 27 at 11 a.m.
Flight Safety Foundation CEO William Voss and Former NTSB Member John Goglia will discuss today’s aviation safety problems with Hughes Aerospace Consulting and Technical Services President Chris Baur and Air Safety Week Editor Ramon Lopez during the webinar.
This realistic assessment will examine this year’s most significant accidents as well as the new rules emerging from both Congress and the FAA. Goglia, now JDA Aviation Technology Solutions senior vice president, Aviation Operations and Safety Programs, and the others will also cover the impact of FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt. His former role as a union chief for the Air Line Pilots Association is expected to have a profound effect on aviation safety especially with respect to lagging FAA action on National Transportation Safety Board recommendations and flight and duty time rule reform which have been front and center in this year’s controversies.
Congress has cited cost cutting measures as having compromised safety and the four experts will examine whether or not this is true along with the impact of highly computerized aircraft such as the A330 and whether this has contributed to its technical problems. Also under discussion is the competition amongst manufacturers and whether that impacts the quality control on the production line.
The four will cover whether or not FAA’s recent emphasis on runway safety has been successful and how NextGen will boost safety, if it is ever fielded.
