Mexico H-60 Returns Fire on Border

A Mexican navy Black Hawk came under fire July 5 near the U.S. border, according to media reports, with its crew returning fire and killing six on the ground. The skirmish took place in a rural area about 20 miles south of Laredo, Texas, near Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The Sikorsky Aircraft H-60 reportedly had been patrolling over the town of El Cuatro, an area known to be controlled by drug cartels, when it was struck repeatedly by ground fire. This follows an incident less than a month ago when the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol dispatched two of its own Black Hawks to fortify the border after one of its Airbus EC120s was hit by ground fire and forced to make an emergency landing in Laredo. The U.S. and Mexican governments had cooperated following that incident, though Mexico had shown concern that the U.S.'s aircraft would risk militarizing the border.
