FAA Awards $6.4 million in New Airport Improvement Grants

Woodrow Bellamy III

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx on Thursday announced $6.4 million in new Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants aimed at improving environmental impacts at 20 different airports across through the United States.

FAA said airports will use the funding to study, plan and develop sustainability initiatives for existing and future airport projects. Some of the improvements will include enabling aircraft to use electricity instead of running engines at airport gates during wait times, and using "green" products at airport facilities.

The largest award was a $600,000 grant to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas.

“These grants will help airports operate more efficiently, providing savings for the airports and their travelers alike, while protecting the health of the local communities they serve," said Secretary Foxx.
