United Airlines Receives $130,000 Fine for Tarmac Violations

United Airlines received a $130,000 fine from the U.S. Department of Transportation for tarmac violations that occurred in Chicago last summer.

DOT said the carrier failed to notify passengers that they had the opportunity to exit a plane for a flight that delayed for nearly five hours. The flight was eventually canceled because of mechanical problems.

The agency implemented the airline consumer protection rule in August 2011 requiring airlines to notify passengers on delayed flights that they have the opportunity to deplane 30 minutes after the scheduled departure time.

“We adopted our tarmac delay rules to protect passengers’ rights and will continue to take enforcement action when necessary,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
