The aircraft is the first delivery from an $840 million order for 36 ATR 72-600s confirmed by Malaysia Airlines in February. Both Maswings and Firefly, Malaysia's other regional subsidiary, will operate the new regional turboprops.

Mohd Nawawi Awang, chief executive of Maswings, noted the airline's selection of the 72-600s because of its fuel efficiency, as he stated that it burns up to "50 percent less fuel than regional jets."

Maswings will use the new aircraft to open up new routes to Brunei and Indonesia, as it prepares to introduce nine 72-600s through 2017.
