ICAO Approves New Aircraft Noise Standard

ICAO announced a new global noise standard with stringent noise reduction requirements for future commercial airplanes.

The organization’s Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection said the new noise standard would be 7 effective perceived noise decibels (EPNdB) below the current Chapter 4 standard which was introduced in 2006. EPNdB is a measure of “human annoyance due to aircraft noise,” ICAO said.

“ICAO is encouraged that, while it took air transport more than 20 years to agree to the last significant noise reduction standard, this one has been determined in less than half that time. This progress confirms our community’s continued determination to deliver on tangible and consensus-based environmental improvements,” said Raymond Benjamin, secretary general of ICAO.

The new noise standard will apply to new-design aircraft entering into service in 2017, and for lower weight aircraft beginning in 2020. More
