Air and Space Museum Hosts ‘Helicopter Day'

Static display, kids activities part of Super Science Saturday program.

The Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum hosted an event dedicated to helicopters on August 11 at the Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport in Virginia. Helicopters on display outside the museum consisted of a Fairfax County Police Bell 429, U.S. Coast Guard Eurocopter MH-65 Dolphin, UH-72 Lakota, MD500 and Robinson R22.

Stations inside the museum included a safety briefing and topics ranging from helicopter discovery and principles of flight to booths for the Navy Helicopter Association, Virginia Airborne Search and Rescue, Whirly-Birds and Helicopter Association International. Intended for children as part of the museum’s “Super Science Saturday” program, the stations also included art activities, a helicopter hunt, “paper copters” and storytime.
