Schumer Proposes Hudson Airspace Measures

During a press conference on Sunday, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) offered a series of measures that would seek to prevent crashes similar to the Aug. 8 collision involving a helicopter and small airplane over the Hudson River. Referring to the high-traffic corridor as the “wild west” of New York City airspace, Schumer says the FAA should monitor all helicopter and aircraft flights below 1,000 feet, and create safety standards for commercial sightseeing tour operations. Other recommendations include more staffing of local control towers and installing cockpit alarms that increase in volume as aircraft come closer to each other.
