Military Calls Off Search For Survivors

Following an extensive search of 644 square miles of the Pacific Ocean, rescue workers halted the search on Sunday for survivors of a midair collision involving a U.S. Marines AH-1 Cobra and a Coast Guard C-130. The crash occurred late Thursday night off the coast of southern California, east of San Clemente Island. Seven people were on the C-130 and two in the helicopter. Efforts will now focus on recovering debris from the crash area and finding the bodies of the missing. On board the helicopter were Maj. Samuel Leigh and First Lt. Thomas Claiborne. The C-130 was carrying pilot Lt. Cmdr. Che Barnes and copilot Lt. Adam Bryant; Chief Petty Officer John Seidman; Petty Officer Second Class Carl Grigonis, Monica Beacham and Jason Moletzsky; and Petty Officer Third Class Danny Kreder.
