[Avionics Today 04-24-2015] United Airlines saw record first quarter profits in 2015 as net income came to $582 million, excluding $74 million in special items. The airline saw a slight drop in the first quarter of 2015 revenues, however, as total revenues came to $8.6 billion, a 1 percent decrease from the same quarter last year.

"This quarter we reported a profit of nearly $600 million, excluding special items, a $1 billion improvement compared to the first quarter of 2014,” said Jeff Smisek, United's chairman, president and CEO, noting that the airline would look to expand its In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) options, purchase new aircraft and modernize facilities going forward.

The company also announced refinements to its fleet plan, including removing 130 50-seat aircraft from its fleet through 2016 as the aircraft come off lease, exchanging 10 Boeing 787 orders for 777-300ERs, and acquiring additional narrow-body aircraft, among others.
