[Avionics Today 11-17-2015] Northrup Grumman has selected the GSX 70 weather radar for the U.S. Air Force fleet of RQ-4 Global Hawk Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). The Doppler-enabled GSX 70 provides operators with real-time weather information to help analyze convective weather threats and make decisions as the mission progresses.

The Global Hawk is a high-altitude and long-endurance unmanned aircraft system, which increases the likelihood it will encounter adverse weather along the flight route. The GSX 70 also provides turbulence detection, which identifies turbulence in air containing precipitation and other airborne particulates and ground clutter suppression, which separates ground returns and removes them from the display, so operators can focus on weather of interest.

Northrop Grumman expects installation of the GSX 70 weather radar within the U.S. Air Force fleet of RQ-4 Global Hawk UAS to begin in the first quarter of 2016.
