Northrop Grumman’s P-8A ESM Receives Official Nomenclature

Northrop Grumman’s Electronic Support Measures (ESM) system for the U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon has received its official nomenclature—the AN/ALQ-240(V)1.

Assigning the ESM with an official nomenclature indicates that the system is unique from existing systems in the existing U.S. inventory. The AN/ALQ-240(V)1 ESM provides adaptive tuning and geolocation capabilities to allow P-8A aircrews to detect and identify radar threats to the aircraft and Navy ships.

Northrop Grumman also provides the early warning self-protection system for the P-8A.

Boeing has delivered three production P-8As to the Navy, and expects the aircraft to enter into service in 2013.

"The awarding of the official nomenclature to our ESM system for the P-8A is significant for Northrop Grumman and the P-8A program and supports transition to production," said Paul Kalafos, vice president of the surveillance systems business unit at Northrop Grumman. "The system will contribute to a powerful maritime surveillance capability for the Navy."
