Thales Wins WAM Pact in Germany

Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS), the German Air Navigation Service Provider, awarded Thales a contract for the delivery, installation, training and commissioning of the PAM-FRA1 (Precision Approach Monitoring Frankfurt) system, the first operational wide area multilateration (WAM) system in Germany. The system will control an area covering 125 by 80 nautical miles. Around the Frankfurt airport, it will be possible to fix on a target as low as 500 feet above the ground, the company said. Over a wider area, which also includes the Hahn airport, Thales guarantees target acquisition starting at 1,000 feet above the ground. For the remainder of the coverage zone, detection will commence at 3,000 feet above the ground. Thales has installations in Australia, the United States, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Korea, Spain and Indonesia.
