Southwest Taps Boeing For Upgrade
Southwest Airlines chose Boeing as lead integrator for the airline's 737-300 and -700 flight deck upgrade. Boeing will design, install and integrate hardware and software from multiple suppliers and perform flight testing and certification.
The 737-300s will be upgraded with systems supplied by GE Aviation, Honeywell and Rockwell Collins. GE large area LCD displays will more closely align the 737-300 and 737-700 flight decks, creating commonality, and allowing the 737-300 to operate in the same preferred airspace as the newer 737-700s, Southwest said.
Southwest also is making a fleet-wide commitment to Required Navigation Performance (RNP) operations, investing $175 million over six years to modify its 737 Classics and NGs. RNP will help the airline reduce fuel consumption, enhance safety, and minimize emissions and noise.
