Southwest Selects GPS for RNP Operations

Southwest Airlines will equip more than 200 Boeing 737 Classic aircraft with Rockwell Collins' GPS-4000S for Required Navigational Performance (RNP) operations, the Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based company said Tuesday. Installation begins this year. Rockwell Collins said the GPS-4000S sensor and associated Wide Area Augmentation System antenna will allow improved availability and integrity of GPS navigation. "Using RNP navigation for more precise approaches enables Southwest Airlines to enhance the traveling experience for its customers, while reducing fuel emissions and noise," said Patricia O'Connell, senior director, Communication and Navigation Programs for Rockwell Collins Commercial Systems. In May, Southwest became the first major airline to announce plans to equip its fleet with RNP capabilities. The airline is partnering with Naverus, Kent, Wash., to develop its RNP program.
