Rossiya Begins Paperless Cockpit Operations

[Avionics Today March 24, 2014] Rossiya Airlines recently introduced an iPad Class 2 Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) into its commercial aircraft operations, as the Russian carrier looks to reduce fuel burn by eliminating paper-based flight manuals.

The airline was recently given operational authorization to use iPad EFB Class 2 technology during all phases of flight by the Russian State Civil Aviation Authority. Rossiya selected Jeppesen's FliteDeck Pro.

"The introduction of modern information technologies for the flight-crew is an important event for our airline, as we have achieved an entirely new level of training and flight operations," said Yury Shchepilov, chief of Rossiya Airlines Aeronautical Information Service Department.

“The decision to use iPads instead of bulky and expensive specialized equipment allows this project to be as efficient as possible and opens up great prospects in the future,” he said. After first introducing the EFBs for its A320s, Rossiya has now equipped its Boeing 767 fleet as well.
