Northrop Awarded Phase III Counter-MANPADS

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has selected Northrop Grumman to carry out Phase III of the Counter-Man Portable Air Defense System (Counter-MANPADS) program. The $55.4 million agreement includes finishing production on 12 Guardian missile defense systems, modifying 11 MD-10 cargo aircraft and operating Guardian systems on nine MD-10s that fly regular commercial service.  The Guardian system detects shoulder-fired missiles and directs a laser to the head of the incoming missile to disrupt its guidance signals.
