Garmin Discontinues GNS 480 GPS Receiver

Citing declining sales, Garmin discontinued its GNS 480 GPS system, ceasing production of what the company said was aviation’s first Gamma-3 WAAS-certified GPS/Comm navigator. On Dec. 31, Garmin sent a memo to its aviation dealer network about the discontinuation. “This decision was based on the fact that sales of the GNS 480 have significantly declined as more and more customers are moving towards the GNS 430W/530W family of WAAS units,” Garmin said. The GNS 480 was introduced as the industry’s first WAAS-certified GPS receiver. However, sales declined in 2006 when the GNS 430W/530W family gained WAAS functionality.

The GNS 480 is still the best IFR Navigator and will be for quite awhile in my opinion. I have studied the 480 for three years now and it is an amazing box. The learning curve on it is high but once learned it is the best. The features I really like are the extended runway centerlines, the ability to create a holding patterns of any type and size, at any waypoint on the flightplan the use of the different types of navigation legs available at the direct to key, and the fast retrieval of information to name a few. Also using a modified flight plan for editing the active flight plan is a great feature.. You won\'t find these features on the 430W and 530W. The 480 never had land data to display but it was designed for IFR and it shows, because that is where its main features are. It had the capability to use the MX 20 or 200 for displaying land traffic etc. The 430 530 W units have nice features of their own including the terrain display but they will never have the cool IFR features of the 480.
