Eurocontrol this month accepted the second deliverable of the SESAR definition phase contract for modernization of the European air-traffic management (ATM) system. Under its definition phase, SESAR, or the Single European Sky Implementation program will deliver, by March 2008, a European ATM master plan out to 2020. The second, implementation phase will involve development and deployment of the master plan initiatives. The definition phase is co-funded by Eurocontrol and the European Commission. Work is being performed by a consortium of 30 companies and organizations. The D2 definition-phase deliverable provides the vision of the air transport industry in 2020, based on airspace users and societal needs, and addresses the requirements for the supply of ATM services and the supporting management and regulatory processes. The study also defines performance targets for designing the future European ATM system, and recommends short-term improvements until new SESAR developments are realized.
