Harris Completes Weather System Transition

Harris Corp., Melbourne, Fla., completed the transition of FAA’s weather radar data in the continental United States to the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) network, which the company said enables air traffic controllers to receive a greater volume of weather radar information faster. The Weather and Radar Processor (WARP) system provides the FAA with the software tools to consolidate weather data from several sources into a single, integrated, real-time display for air traffic operations. Under contracts awarded in 1996 and 2005, Harris developed, installed and is supporting WARP systems at the FAA's 21 Air Route Traffic Control Centers, the Air Traffic Control System Command Center and the William J. Hughes Technical Center. During the 15-year FTI program, Harris said it is upgrading telecommunications and operations functions at more than 4,000 FAA facilities nationwide. The network is expected save $600 million over the life of the program.
