Avionics on Display at the NBAA ... A Product Showcase
The following companies exhibited these new products at the 2007 National Business Aircraft Association Annual Meeting and Convention, held Sept. 24-26 in Atlanta.
EMS Satcom
EMS Satcom, a division of EMS Technologies, Inc., announced at the NBAA Meeting and Convention, that Inmarsat has approved its eNfusion HSD-400 High-Speed Data terminal, making it the first commercially available product approved for use with Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband network.
Originally introduced as a Swift64 terminal in November of 2004, and delivered in June of 2005, the HSD-400 terminal is software upgradeable to support the new SwiftBroadband services, offering background class and streaming class services, with circuit mode operation available for Inmarsat’s commercial service introduction later this year. Background-class service is ideal for Internet and e mail traffic as the user pays by the megabit. It is a cost-effective service that is always connected. The streaming-class service is best suited to videoconferencing and other real-time applications and provides guaranteed 32 – 224 kbps data rates. The SwiftBroadband network enables a number of new capabilities for in-flight communications. Not only a more cost-effective system, it is also more flexible, allowing for simultaneous multiple types of communications — e-mail, Internet, voice and videoconference — on a single channel. Honeywell Aerospace
Honeywell Aerospace exhibited a breadth of products and services for business aviation at NBAA 2007, including:
- Primus Epic with Integrated Primary Flight Display (IFPD) – Honeywell’s award-winning synthetic vision system gives pilots an unprecedented view of flight path, terrain and navigation environment on the primary flight display.
- Primus Epic Control Display System Retrofit – This state-of-the art liquid crystal display retrofit system now showcases new features such as electronic charts, maps and uplink graphical weather providing pilots the best situational awareness in a cockpit retrofit system.
- Primus Apex – Honeywell’s newest integrated flight deck system designed specifically for turboprop and light to mid-size business jets. Primus Apex has been selected for the Pilatus next-generation PC-12 and the new Grob spn aircraft. Safety and navigation systems are the foundation of Honeywell’s legacy in avionics.
- Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System, Runway Awareness and Advisory System, Flight Data Recorders, Weather Radar and TCAS systems were also displayed. They continue to be the preferred and most reliable choice for operators looking for the best option for flight safety and navigation.
Honeywell is currently working with partners and the FAA to bring Required Navigation Performance (RNP) to the business jet industry. A display on the advantages of RNP was exhibited at the show. Visit www.honeywell.com.
CAST Navigation
CAST GPS simulators that are being used in government and military labs around the world will now be made available to commercial markets.
The VIP line of GPS simulators will share the same quality and flexibility as CAST’s more capable systems since they are based on the same digital architecture enabling full control of the GPS signal spectrum.
The simulators are capable of producing modernized GPS civilian signals such as L2C, L5-I, L5-Q, SBAS and M-noise as well as the recently published civilian signals, L1C-I and L1C-Q.
The VIP simulator is a PC-based system that is controlled via Ethernet from a Windows PC. It utilizes CAST Windows interface software for remotely controlling simulations. Visit www.castnav.com.
Barco
Avionics display specialist Barco received ETSO-C113 authorization for the 10-inch Primary Flight Displays used in Honeywell’s Primus Apex integrated flight deck, the company announced at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) meeting.
The certification recognizes that the displays, marketed by Honeywell as KDU-1080, have successfully met EASA's (European Aviation Safety Agency) standards for airworthiness. In addition to ETSO-C113 regulations, the KDU-1080 displays also comply with the DO-254 level A guidelines specified by the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics.
Under a very aggressive time schedule, Barco concluded the KDU-1080 development project from initial assignment to certification in less than 18 months. “This achievement is proof of our dedication to quality, commitment to schedule, and continual focus on our customers,” said Luc Vandenbroucke, senior executive vice president of Barco.
The KDU-1080 displays used in the Primus Apex suite will be integrated into various business jet applications including the Grob spn and Pilatus PC-12. Primus Apex will provide pilots with sunlight-readable images and a wide viewing angle to enable optimum cross-cockpit visibility. Visit www.barco.com.
