[Avionics Today 02-03-2016] XTAR, a U.S.-based commercial X-band satellite operator, and Satcom Direct Communications (SDC), the military and government division of Satcom Direct, have formed a partnership to offer an on-demand and minutes-based satcom service for military and government end users. The X-band service will address the growing requirements for airborne Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) bandwidth for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions and VIP transport. According to a statement released by XTAR, the service will also support  testing and training of new terminals to offer aircraft throughput rates of up to 12 Mbps.

The service will be available as a stand alone or roaming options to augment the government’s WGS X-Band constellation.

“Many government users require tremendous throughput potential, at exactly the right time and without interruption, yet must achieve their mission in a cost-effective manner. This partnership makes X-band accessible to a new class of user, including those operating small airframes,” said Philip Harlow, president and chief operating officer of XTAR.
