New Avionics Publisher Named

Access Intelligence LLC has appointed Tish Drake publisher of Avionics Magazine. Drake has been with Access Intelligence for more than 10 years as publisher of Communications Technology magazine, a broadband industry publication. She can be reached at tdrake@accessintel.com or 800-325-0156.

Nicholas E. Calio

The Air Transport Association (ATA) named Nicholas E. Calio president and CEO effective Jan. 1, replacing James May who had led ATA since 2003.

Calio most recently led Global Government Affairs for Citigroup in the United States and in the more than 100 countries in which the company does business.

Prior to joining Citigroup in 2003, Calio was the Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs and served as chief liaison to the U.S. Congress for President George W. Bush, the same position he held under President George H.W. Bush.

John Jarrell

John Jarrell was named vice president and general manager of EMS Aviation. He replaces Nim Evatt, who is retiring.

Jarrell joined EMS from Sensis Corp., where he was vice president and general manager of Air Traffic Systems. Prior to Sensis, Jarrell spent a decade at SITA, most recently as senior vice president of Airport & Desktop Services and Regional Customer Service and Operation. Jarrell also held management positions in the Airport Systems division of EDS, now HP Enterprise Services, and with Texas Instruments.

A pilot for 35 years, Jarrell also was a military aviator serving in the U.S. Army as an airfield commander, operations officer and flight platoon leader, as well as the Army’s air traffic and airspace officer for the Washington, D.C. area.

John Purvis

AeroMech Engineering, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., a builder of unmanned air systems, named John Purvis vice president of small tactical unmanned air systems.

Purvis comes to AME from a large ISR systems integrator, where he was vice president for corporate strategic development and international business. He founded the Aviation Programs business area in Denver, leading more than 425 people in service of the U.S. Special Operations Command and U.S. Air Force.

Michael Wareing

Cobham appointed Michael Wareing as a non-executive director. Wareing was formerly chief executive of KPMG International and is currently a non-executive member of the board of Wolseley.

He worked for KPMG from 1973 to 2009, when he retired.

Christopher Forshier

Metron Aviation, based in Dulles, Va., appointed Christopher Forshier director of business development for Global Airline Operations.

Prior to Metron Aviation, Forshier was manager of operations strategy and implementation for Continental Airlines.

Forshier has more than 15 years of experience in the commercial airline industry, including operations analysis and planning, customer service, ground operations and technical program management. His tenure at Continental includes time as lead strategist for the evaluation of NextGen technologies for the airline’s operations control and flight dispatch center.

ICG Engineering Promotions

International Communications Group (ICG), of Newport News, Va., announced two promotions to management positions within its Engineering Group.

Wagdy Hanna was promoted to software department manager. Prior to joining ICG in 2007, Hanna was the software team leader at Spotwave Wireless. Before that, he worked at Nortel Networks and GSI Lumonics.

Olga Diskin was named principal software engineer. Previously, she was senior software engineer. Diskin joined ICG in 2000. In addition to directing the AeroCom 3000 feature development, she has worked on the Iridium credit card platform design and development, Iridium billing and reporting system and configuration and monitoring tools for the AeroCom 1100, ICS-200 and ICS-400 products.

Ashish Sharma

FreeWave Technologies, of Boulder, Colo., named Ashish Sharma chief marketing officer and general manager of products.

Prior to joining FreeWave, Sharma was vice president of marketing for Alvarion.

Before Alvarion, he worked for Ericsson Wireless Communications as director of business unit sales, and for Qualcomm, where he helped to develop some of the early CDMA systems.

Brad Hicks

Lockheed Martin named Brad Hicks vice president of radar programs within its Mission Systems and Sensors (MS2) business. MS2, based in Washington, D.C., is part of the company’s Electronic Systems business area. Hicks joins Lockheed Martin from the Monitor Group, where he was a consultant after retiring from the U.S. Navy in 2009.

Synergy Jet Group

Thomas A. Chapman has formed Synergy Jet Group, based in Atlanta, a business aviation advisory firm. Synergy offers sales prospecting development and implementation solutions for manufacturers of business aircraft, their vendors and service providers, including aircraft interior designers and completion centers. Chapman serves as president.
