Statistics Show Airline Hijackings Have Plummeted
While March 29's hijacking of an EgyptAir A320 enroute from Alexandria to Cairo has all eyes back on aircraft hostage situations, this chart by the Aviation Safety Network and Statsita demonstrates just how rare events of this kind are these days. This is especially in comparison to the almost-weekly occurrence that hijackings proved to be in the early 70s.
Heightened airport security, bullet-proof cockpit doors and other improvements in aircraft designed have contributed to this drop in aircraft hijackings and are likely to keep the numbers dropping.
