UK Grant Boosts Flight Safety

Flight Data Services (FDS) has won a grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) that will help improve flight safety in years to come. Working with the Institute of Industrial Research (IIR), FDS is developing Artificial Intelligence techniques that will extract flight safety information from recorded flight data processed each month. Managing Director, Dave Jesse said "we know that hidden in the raw data are clues that will allow airlines to fly more safely, but the information is very difficult to extract. With this grant the IIR can bring a specialist mathematician into the team to tackle this difficult problem. The goal is to make air travel safer by learning from daily operations and without waiting for an accident to make safety improvements." FDS is a leading UK flight data monitoring service provider. The IIR is part of the University of Portsmouth while the EPSRC is The UK Government's leading funding agency for research and training in engineering and the physical sciences.
