The Boeing 787 “Dreamliner” Protection Strategy
Every air show has its “buzz,” and this year at Farnborough, the overarching topic is, once again, the bitter rivalry between Boeing and Airbus. Boeing will display the passenger-friendly cabin interior of its 787 “Dreamliner,” a fuel-efficient, composites-intensive midsize commercial passenger jet that’s giving beleaguered Airbus a run for its money. To safeguard this crucial new product, Boeing has developed a multilayered approach toward lightning strike protection. Boeing will use a thin metal mesh or foil in the outer layers of the composite fuselage and wings to quickly dissipate and route charge overboard and shield onboard electronics.
