TSA Nixes Delta Flights to Africa
Delta Air Lines won’t be allowed to provide flights from the U.S. to Nairobi, Kenya (via Dakar) and direct service to Monrovia, Liberia until the airports there beef up their security. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) called the current threat to civil aviation in east Africa too significant to allow the new international service.
The TSA denied Delta's 2008 proposal to begin air service to the two cities after security assessments at the airports. TSA did approve an accompanying request to fly into Abuja, Nigeria. In denying the new service to Kenya and Liberia, TSA noted security vulnerabilities in and around Nairobi, as well as the failure of Roberts International in Monrovia to meet safety recommendations set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
TSA currently has a team of security experts assisting officials at the airport in Monrovia assisting in improving security there.
