Runway Lights caused a Delta Diversion the Day before Comair 5191
FAA has on record complaints about the confusing intersecting runways and taxiways at Kentucky's Blue Grass Airport that date back to the early 1990's. It's also just been revealed, under Freedom of Information, that a Delta flight headed into Kentucky refused to land and diverted back into Hebron. It had overflown the Blue Grass Airport on 26 August and seen that the main runway's lights were out of service. The next day, 27 August, Comair Flight 5191 crashed after mistakenly lining up for takeoff on the much shorter and unlit general aviation runway (runway 26). The CRJ-200 N431CA failed to get airborne in the pre-dawn half-light and 49 of the 50 persons on board died. The August 25/26 outage was blamed on wiring problems. The airport's director of operations said the runway had been completely rewired in the fall. Airport management and the Federal Aviation Administration have previously stated that the main runway (22 )'s edge lights were working on the morning of the crash, although the centerline lights remained unserviceable.
