NTSB Lawyers Meet

The National Transportation Safety Board Bar Association, the organization of attorneys and other aviation professionals practicing before the NTSB, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT), says its annual meeting will be held Nov. 12, 2009 at the Holiday Inn Capitol, 550 C Street, SW, Washington, D.C. 20024. Highlighting the meeting will be the presentation of the NTSB Bar Association’s First Annual Joseph T. Nall Award, which recognizes those individuals who have made significant contributions to aviation and transportation safety. The recipient of the Nall Award is Captain Alfred C. Haynes, the pilot of United Airlines Flight 232 which on July 19, 1989, suffered a catastrophic engine explosion which severed all hydraulic lines and disabled nearly all flight controls.  Nonetheless, Captain Haynes and his crew managed to bring the aircraft down at Sioux City, Iowa.  184 of the 296 passengers and crew survived the crash, against all odds. Long since retired from United Airlines after a 35-year career with that airline, Captain Haynes has lectured throughout the country on teamwork and post traumatic stress. The Award is named in memory of Joseph T. Nall, who served as a Member of the Safety Board from 1986 until his untimely death in 1989 while on official NTSB business in Caracas, Venezuela. Tickets for the reception and dinner can be obtained by contacting NTSB Bar Association Headquarters at (410) 571-1950 or on the Bar Association’s website, www.ntsbbar.org
