Smiths Detection has claimed a $6 million contract from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for IONSCAN 500DT trace explosives detectors for use at airport checkpoints. The IONSCAN 500DT is the first dual explosives detector to be placed by the TSA on the Qualified Products List. It can detect trace amounts of explosives from a single sample in seconds using proven Ion Mobility Spectrometry technology. The desktop device provides a security screening solution appropriate for ports and borders, air cargo screening facilities, public and private buildings, courthouses and correctional facilities. Smiths Detection has more than 6,000 desktop trace detection systems deployed throughout the world with X-ray and trace detection technology installed at approximately 80 percent of the world’s airports.
