L-3 Wins $43M for NEXRAD

L-3 Communications was recently awarded a $43 million National Weather Service (NWS) contract for the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) upgrade program. Baron Services is a key L-3 partner in this initiative. NEXRAD, a system of 171 weather radars positioned across the U.S. and overseas locations, forms the backbone capability for observing, predicting and collecting data on localized weather phenomena. This contract covers the implementation of a NEXRAD system-wide enhancement, including converting the radars to dual-polarization Doppler capability, a process that will significantly enhance the NWS' ability to specifically identify and accurately measure precipitation. As part of the NEXRAD upgrade, L-3 will provide systems engineering, integration, field installation services and program management. Baron Services, a leader in the Doppler Weather Radar market, will design, develop and produce the NEXRAD dual-polarization radar system kits. L-3 Enterprise IT Solutions (L-3 EITS), based in Reston, VA, is a leading enterprise IT solutions and services provider to a broad range of customers worldwide.
