The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has revalidated the licenses of some seven airlines which had earlier failed to meet the government's new recapitalization requirements. The newly recapitalized airlines are said to have gone searching for funds from wherever so as to meet the elevated benchmark. By re-issuing the licenses, Nigeria is now back up to having 20 airlines in operation. Thirteen airlines had earlier retained their certification. Newly reinvigorated airlines include Aviation Development Company (ADC), Sosoliso Airlines, Albarka Airlines, Chrome Airlines, Dasab Airlines, Fresh Airlines and Skypower Airlines. It's not expected that all 20 airlines will survive the intense competition in the low cost sector. Merger activity in the short to medium term will probably reduce the numbers back to around the 13 who'd met the earlier recapitalization requirements. The government's focus is upon favored airlines re-equipping with new aircraft. However whether that measure will decrease the incidence of accidents is very much open to debate.
